The Institute of Environmental Accountants is a specialized accounting institution for the good purpose of promoting professionalism in environmental quality. We deals with the ways where the existing accounting theory and practice fail to adequately account for the increasing environmental concerns and crises which are attributed to the economic activities of nations, states and organizations.
Specifically, we identify measure and report environmental costs i.e., degradation, control and management. While environmental scientist, assess environmental status to determine degradation, it is the responsibility of the environmental accountant to determine the cost of such degradation to the economy, at local and national levels. Most importantly, the environmental accountant also determines the net balance of preventing degradation from occurring. It is for instance, the environmental accountant who will be able to determine the environmental cost/balance sheet and the overall effect on the national economy.
