The supervision of others is more an art than a science. More specifically, being a supervisor, is not just a set of behaviours that you apply the same way in all situations. Rather, it is the ability to assess an environment – and its people – and choose the right skills and applications for each specific situation. The first step in this process is to ensure each supervisor possesses the key skills of managing oneself to be an example of leading a team.
This program is designed to equip supervisors with a set of tools and best practices that will ensure that they are confident and competent individuals that enhance their ability to deliver organizational objectives.
The program starts by helping supervisors to clarify their responsibilities and objectives. It then helps them to know what those reporting to them should and should not be doing. Participants will learn to understand the whole communication process and their own communication style with opportunities to enhance those skills. Emphasis will also be placed on the supervisor’s behaviour and maximizing the positives and avoiding the pitfalls when motivating and getting the best out of direct reports, creating a positive impression and building your personal reputation organization-wide and managing your time and workload effectively.
Learning Objectives
By attending Leading and managing high performing teams: supervisor level highly interactive program, delegates will:
- Identify Understand the characteristics of effective self-management (professional development and personal transformation) and ethical leadership
- Understand and communicate the team purpose and objectives and ensure each team member understands these
- Master the essential people and change management skills of effective communication, advocacy, and presentation and apply these skills to ensure effective high-functioning team performance
- Have a clear process for establishing, clarifying, and agreeing their own and their team members role and responsibilities
- Understand the keys to better communications and have begun to practice them
- Have improved their ability to influence others through an understanding of financial data, budgeting, planning, mentor, and coach
- Have practiced handling poor performance and supervising marginal performers
- Be skilled in dealing with difficult situations and people as they arise
- Have learned the practical steps involved in a delegation that succeeds
- Have a toolkit of problem-solving and decision-making skills which can be adapted to different situations
Target Audience
This training course is designed for supervisors who must achieve success through their self-management and management of people and who wish to develop competencies or skills relevant to supervising, motivating and ensuring teams understand and deliver company policies and required behaviours. It will also offer each supervisor how to consciously influence team members/stakeholders and create productive behaviours that lead to optimal team impact.
Training Methodology
This highly practical and results-oriented program is based on adult learning concept. The facilitator will give plenty of input and then help participants to make sense of the themes through discussion and practice. It incorporates short inspiring demonstrations; role play and much practice to enhance learning. There will be ample time for Q and A, discussions with ‘return to work’ action planning. The course will reinforce key concepts within an inspiring and engaging learning environment.
Pre and Post course assessments will be used to measure the effectiveness of this training and measure the skill and ability of participants.
Course Contents
Day 1 - The Anatomy of Self-Mastery
Description:
- On Day One we look at committing to live your life form the paradigm of personal integrity
- Who am I and how do and should I spend my time and energy?
- What is meant by values: paid work, unpaid work, play?
- The importance of our images, being aware of our filter’s presence and influence
- Three conscious processes and how to ‘observe us’ to take control of our future
- Achievement orientation and understanding personal paradigms and principles that deliver personal goals and time planning
Day 2 - The Holistic Supervisor
Description:
- On Day Two we look at how self-mastery occurs as we interact effectively with all the events and circumstances of our personal and work relationships
- Self-development and personal transformation – understanding and taking control of ourselves and our relationships
- Interpersonal Effectiveness – thinking ‘win-win’ and the principles of interpersonal leadership
- Customer Focus – the principles of empathic communication
- Awareness of the external environment – the principles of creative cooperation
- Self-awareness and control – the principles of balanced self-renewal
- Understanding the concept of PAIN and PAIN chains
Day 3 - Supervising to Make Things Happen
Description:
- On Day three we look at how being a supervisor to about getting others to think first and then act.
- Principles and approaches to ethical leadership supervision
- Understanding the supervisor’s role and responsibilities – Health and Safety, absence management/reporting, performance management and training or career development
- Proactively controlling the impact of our behavior
- Core communication, the power of questions and active listening
- Introduction to setting concrete objectives, delegating and motivation
- Presenting yourself and creating/sustaining positive personal impression with key stakeholders
Day 4 - Managing Stakeholders
Description:
- On Day four we look at your confidence, personal effectiveness, and your ability to handle stakeholder challenges to build your reputation
- Negotiating with and persuading stakeholders
- Bring holistically: understanding the essentials of finance, budgeting, and planning
- Positively selling yourself by creating ‘win-win’ dialogues
- Identifying your current working style and the implications for personal development
- Preparing for action meetings
- Personal professional development and transformation
- Conducting appraisal reviews, giving feedback and being a mentor and coach
Day 5 - Supervising Performance
Description:
- On Day Five we look at assuming full responsibility for living, growing, and contributing as a proactive supervisor
- Creating a positive team environment/being a team supervisor
- Managing others time and priorities
- Ensuring you stay on track and proactively manage your and your team’s performance
- Constructive confrontation and supervising for performance improvement
- Supervising discipline and dealing with grievances
- Personal action planning
